Towards the end of 1996 a major archaeological discovery was
made in the Alentejo area. Perdigões, an impressive group of monuments, includes a settlement, a necropolis and a cromelech. In spite of the clarity of the outlines of the settlement, which is obvious from the darker areas of soil indicating the various ditches and walls or palissades, this site, which covers more than 16 ha, is much more complex than originally suggested by the aerial
photographs. The archaeological investigation was carried out following agricultural work on lands belonging to FINAGRA, S.A., work which disturbed the archaeological context. Era Arqueologia, Ltd. was responsible for carrying out the preliminary investigation and it is hoped that this will be the beginning of a wider program of investigation which will enhance the true importance of this major
group of monuments.
The first phase involved systematic field survey and the recording of surface data. The aim of the second phase was the excavation of the archaeological context in five specific areas, and the third led to a final report which is broadly summarised in this article.
Preliminary data indicate a settlement which existed between the second half of the 4th and the 3rd millenium BC.
This paper includes a description and interpretation of the main archaeological contexts identified and an analysis of different aspects of material culture and human remains from a tholos type tomb. We also offer a preliminary analysis of the role played by this site in the processes of transformation which occurred throughout this time period in the Reguengos de Monsaraz area and in the Iberian Peninsula in general.

Historic summary and research development prospects
of the Perdigões archaeological site (Reguengos de Mon -
saraz, Évora), particularly regarding the process that
began in 1997 to minimise the impact of agricultural ac -
tiv ities.
The importance of the site eventually led to a systematic
study and valorisation programme, based on the concept
of “Archaeology in Construction”. Its aim is to promote
the valorisation and social integration of this Chalcolithic
habitat, which has important funerary and defence structures.

In this work a study was performed with ceramics and clay materials representative of regional geological contexts, aiming to establish potential raw materials for Perdigões pot- tery, so one can ascertain their provenance as well as the existence of diversity in ceramic productions according to different purposes/uses.
Considering one of the main questions, and specifically the possibility of a specific production of pottery recipients used in funerary rituals, it seems that diversified raw materials were used in pottery of funerary rituals. This could reflect different origins, perhaps due to the use of Perdigões necropolis by peripheric, but related, communities.

A actual legislação portuguesa e brasileira impõe a concretização de medidas de minimização de impactes sobre o Património arqueológico decorrentes da sua afectação por projectos das mais diversas tipologias. O texto visa, numa primeira fase, analisar os principais problemas que se colocam ás equipas de gestão de projectos de obras que incluem componentes de Arqueologia, relativamente às quais as acções associadas são tradicionalmente encaradas como de total imprevisibilidade. Em Portugal os vestígios arqueológicos relevantes são, na maioria dos casos, detectados já em fase de obras, decorrendo desse facto constrangimentos ao evoluir da obra e à boa execução de medidas de minimização. Os riscos são normalmente assumidos como inevitáveis e os gestores de projectos de obras com Arqueologia avançam sem segurança. Numa segunda fase, será apresentado um modelo de actuação que fornece aos promotores e gestores de grande obras públicas ferramentas de integração das acções de Arqueologia no âmbito dos seus projectos, tornando possível um adequado planeamento, dimensionamento e controlo de acções de Arqueologia prévias ou em simultâneo a obras.

Numa segunda fase, serão apresentadas pistas para um modelo de actuação alternativo ao actual que fornece aos promotores e gestores de grande obras públicas ferramentas de integração das acções de arqueologia no âmbito dos seus projectos, tornando possível um mais adequado planeamento, dimensionamento e controlo de acções de arqueologia prévias ou em simultâneo a obras.
